What does it look like to build greater independence, develop social and life skills, and feel connected to your local community?

For individuals participating in Gateway Center’s Community Day Services Program, it looks like volunteering at a local beach cleanup, taking a class at Monterey Peninsula College, exploring the Monterey County Fair, enjoying a day at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, or making autumn memories at a pumpkin patch—all with the guidance and encouragement of supportive, trained staff.

For adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), these experiences are about more than participating in community activities. They create meaningful opportunities to build confidence, exercise personal choice, develop relationships, and contribute to the places and communities they call home.

“At Gateway Center, we believe meaningful community inclusion goes beyond simply being present in the community. It means having opportunities to participate, contribute, build relationships, and be recognized as a valued community member,” said Mike Gonzalez, Executive Director & President of Gateway Center of Monterey.

Here is a closer look at what makes our Community Day Services Program so special, how it fills a vital community need, and how your loved one can join us.

What is the Community Day Services Program?

Gateway Center’s Community Day Services Program is a community-integration program designed for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities aged 22 and older. Operating out of our main Pacific Grove campus, the program maintains a supportive 1:4 staff-to-participant ratio, ensuring every individual receives personalized guidance while actively participating in their community.

The program combines daily campus-based activities with regular local excursions throughout Monterey County and surrounding areas. Through strong community partnerships, participants gain access to volunteer opportunities, recreational outings, and educational experiences.

Our goal is to support each individual’s independence, personal growth, and meaningful community membership. Through age-appropriate experiences, relationships, and opportunities to contribute, we help participants build the skills and confidence to become active, valued members of their communities.

Building Independence Through Community Participation

Community participation is an essential part of personal growth, independence, and belonging. At Gateway Center, we emphasize everyday experiences that are age appropriate, encourage meaningful interactions with others, recognize individual strengths, and create opportunities for participants to contribute to their communities.

  • Giving Back: Through volunteer activities, participants contribute directly to their community, building a sense of pride and connection.
  • Exploring Interests: Educational and recreational activities help individuals discover new interests, try new skills, and grow their self-confidence at their own pace.
  • Practicing Choice: From picking an excursion activity to managing personal choices during outings, participants practice making decisions..
  • Building Community Connections: Opportunities to interact with community members, develop relationships, and participate in shared experiences help strengthen a sense of belonging.

Meeting a Vital Need in Monterey County

For many adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, transitioning out of the school system can leave a gap in structured routines, skill development, and social connection.

Gateway Center fills this critical need by providing an active, dignity-centered environment where adults can continue learning and building relationships. The impact extends across our entire region: when adults with IDD are visible, active, and contributing members of the community, it fosters greater empathy, understanding, and inclusion for everyone in Monterey County.

From Beach Cleanups to Boardwalks: Learning Through Experience

What does a typical day look like in our Community Day Program? No two days are identical! Our program participants are offsite almost every day, experiencing community-based outings such as these recent events:

Giving Back at Carmel Beach

Gateway Center partnered with Save Our Shores for a three-part series focused on environmental stewardship and community engagement. More than 30 participants, staff, volunteers, and leadership joined forces for a beach cleanup at Carmel Beach. Participants gained hands-on experience protecting our local coastline and made personal commitments to continue caring for the environment.

Exploring the Monterey County Fair

A trip to the fair provided a fun environment for participants to explore, practice making choices, interact with others, and enjoy a favorite local tradition—from animal visits to ride attractions.

Learning at Monterey Peninsula College (MPC)

Participants returned to the Monterey Peninsula College (MPC) campus for the fall semester. Attending MPC classes provides valuable opportunities to learn, build independence, connect with the community, and experience everything that a college campus has to offer.

Enjoying the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk

Thanks to generous ride wristband donations from Save Our Shores, participants enjoyed an unforgettable day at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk filled with laughter, bonding, and all the rides!

Discovering Fall Fun at Spina Farms

At Spina Farms Pumpkin Patch, participants rode the train through the cornfields, shared lunch in the picnic area, and explored the exhibits, providing a festive fall backdrop to practice social skills and enjoy seasonal traditions together.

Each outing looks different, but the core objective remains constant: creating structured, supportive opportunities for individuals to build independence, connect with others, and grow.
