Gateway Center Pacific Grove welcomed a visible symbol of positive change this August with the unveiling of a new sign at its main campus. Featuring our modernized logo, the sign creates a welcoming entrance and reflects the organization’s ongoing transformation.
More than a new look, the sign represents the progress Gateway Center is making to strengthen its facilities, support employees, enhance programs, and build a more inclusive community.

“The moment people come to Gateway Center – whether you’re an individual receiving services, a Board member, a family member, a donor, or staff member – this sign is the first impression,” said Mike Gonzalez, Executive Director & President of Gateway Center. “The new sign is a visible symbol of our continued evolution and the future we are building together – a professional, respected, and inclusive organization.”
The Symbolism of a Sign: Positive Changes for Gateway Center
In the past 1.5 years and under new leadership, Gateway Center has focused on strengthening and stabilizing the organization. The new sign is one visible example of that progress. Here are some of the changes taking place behind the sign:
Improving Our Physical Spaces
The individuals we serve and our dedicated staff deserve spaces that reflect the dignity, purpose, and welcoming spirit of Gateway Center. Over the past year, we launched the Gateway Center Improvement Initiative and began making strategic improvements to our facilities and campus.
The Initial efforts of the Improvement Initiative have focused on the Pacific Grove campus, with plans to extend improvements to our Marina and Salinas locations in the coming year. Improvements include:
- Transformed an underutilized outdoor space into a beautiful courtyard where individuals can enjoy nature, socialize, and connect in a safe space.
- Created a new lobby entrance to provide a more welcoming experience for visitors and community members.
- Developed organized workspaces and a staff break room to better support employees in their daily work.
- Purchased a new van to provide safe, reliable transportation for the individuals we serve.
- Began renovating Intermediate Care Facility (ICF) rooms (with three out of 30 completed to date) and improved ICF management workspaces.
- Managed tree care on the Pacific Grove campus for safety, preventive maintenance, and storm readiness.

As part of the Improvement Initiative, the Board of Directors approved a 3-year Capital Improvement Plan that outlines priority facility investments aligned with organizational safety, regulatory compliance, operational sustainability, and long-term strategic growth.
Priority projects include:
- Electrical Infrastructure Improvements
- Marina (Reindollar) Facility Improvements
- Keyless Entry and Security Enhancements
- Vehicle Fleet Replacement and Expansion
- Intermediate Care Facilities (ICF) Kitchen Renovation
- Parking Lot Improvements
- Long-Term Planning for Lower-Level Renovation
Cultivating a Culture of Support
Our employees are at the heart of Gateway Center. This year, we have focused on cultivating an organizational culture that values, develops, and supports our dedicated staff.
- Developed employee appreciation and engagement initiatives to recognize our staff and support employee connection and retention.
- Launched a new performance evaluation system designed to provide employees with meaningful feedback, development, and opportunities for growth.
- Secured a $25,000 Kaiser Permanente grant to support a 12-month behavioral health workforce training program, equipping 120 frontline staff with practical, evidence-based skills to better support individuals experiencing challenging behaviors.

Strengthening Community Partnerships
In the past year, we’ve focused on strengthening our partnerships with elected officials and local partners, while expanding our presence at community events.
We have:
- Connected with regional partners at events in San Jose and Salinas sponsored by the San Andreas Regional Center (SARC).
- Welcomed volunteers, elected officials, local business leaders, and community partners to our campuses, increasing awareness of our mission and building relationships that strengthen our work.
- Participated in community events including Pacific Grove’s Good Old Days, the Monterey Pride Parade, the United Way Community Breakfast, and a Save Our Shores beach clean-up.

Strengthening Programs and Services
As Gateway Center continues to evolve, we are also looking for new ways to strengthen our programs and respond to the changing needs of the people we serve. This includes maintaining high standards for quality and compliance.
Over the past year, we have:
- Welcomed Comet, our new facility dog and therapeutic partner, whose loving presence brings comfort, connection, and joy to program participants and staff.
- Created a Day Program Advisory Council, bringing together 18 stakeholders from across the service system to develop a five-year master plan that better responds to the needs and goals of day program participants.
- Started exploring service expansion in Salinas and South County to address current facility limitations and future space needs.
- Successfully completed regulatory reviews, reflecting our ongoing commitment to quality, accountability, and continuous improvement across our programs and services.
- Launched a new community-based Medical Day Program that combines skilled medical oversight with inclusive, meaningful programming.
A New Sign for a Bright Future
For more than 60 years, Gateway Center has been part of the Monterey County community. Today, we are building on that history while looking ahead—with renewed focus, strengthened programs, improved spaces, engaged employees, and deeper community partnerships.
Our new sign welcomes people through the door, but it represents something much deeper.

As we look ahead, we remain committed to advancing our mission and vision and creating opportunities for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities to live, belong, and thrive.
